THE SALT LAKE OBSERVER CORPS

Monitoring local government

  • What's New in Local Government

Each week the Salt Lake League’s Observer Corps attends county council, city council, school board and commission meetings to follow and report on important local issues. Check out this week’s summary of Observer reports.

League members can access the complete reports by joining the County and Local Government Committee. Please contact observer-chair@lwvsl.org for more information.

  • What We Do

The Observer Corps helps ensure that county and municipal government is open, accountable and responsive to the needs of residents. We do this by:

    • Attending local meetings—from grassroots community councils and special commissions to formal governance bodies like city and county councils

    • Demonstrating to local officials that citizens care about the issues

    • Sharing what we learn to engage and inform our community

Our efforts this year have had a direct impact on COVID-19 masking, ranked choice voting and the gravel pit in Parley’s Canyon.

  • How to Become an Observer

The Observer Corps is seeking volunteers to ensure that every city, school board and major commission in Salt Lake County is covered at least once a month by an Observer. We are specifically looking for volunteers to observe the Racial Equity in Policing Commission, Magna, West Valley City, and West Jordan. If you are interested in joining, select Join the Corps--and \keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming meetings and training.
