Join the League of Women Voters of Salt Lake and community partners as we celebrate the anniversary of one of our nation’s landmark civil rights achievements, the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These events aim to inspire the next generation of voters through education, engagement, and action. Each features a different guest speaker and voting rights documentary providing historical context and lived perspectives, along with:
Nonpartisan voter education and registration
Opportunities to connect with community organizations strengthening democracy

Thursday, Aug. 6 | 5:30–7:30 p.m. | Marmalade Library, 280 W. 500 North, Salt Lake City
Speaker: Jenessa Jimoh, executive director of Ignite! Utah, a nonprofit organization that helps young people learn about voting and become engaged in their local communities.
Documentary: After Selma, a 2019 documentary, directed by Emmy Award winner Loki Mulholland, that explores the ongoing fight against voter suppression in the U.S.
Thursday, Aug. 13 | 5:30–8:30 p.m. | Viridian Event Center, 8030 S. 1825 West, West Jordan
Speaker: Darlene McDonald, founder of Selma Institute, a Salt Lake City-based nonprofit that helps people trace their ancestry and honor the history of enslaved Africans.
Documentary:Standing on My Sister's Shoulders, an award-winning 2002 documentary, follows the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi through the eyes of the courageous women who lived it and emerged as grassroots leaders.
